Kei ngā maunga whakahī, kei ngā wai tuku kiri, kei ngā mātāwaka o te
motu, ka nui te mihi.
On behalf of the 2026 conference committee, we welcome all delegates to Te Mataua-Māui Hawke’s Bay, and to Lindisfarne College. The New Zealand History Teachers’ Association is especially honoured to hold their biennial conference on the whenua of Ngāti Kahungungu and Hawke’s Bay Whānui. Our conference theme speaks to the changing nature of history and how history can be viewed through multiple lenses. At a time in history when expressing differing perspectives can be seen as confrontational, rather than the beginning of a shared discussion around expanding worldviews, we encourage you all to hold on to the idea that it is possible to hold contrary points of view about places, people, and events and still be a critical thinker, open to new ideas and beliefs. As we have is past conferences, we invite you to operate in the spirit of awhiawhi wero, or being challenged whilst simultaneously being supported to take on that challenge. We believe that this conference will add to your professional development, encourage you to make new connections within our community, and send you into the next school
term with renewed passion for History as a subject.
Ngā mihi nui,
Rene Hanham,
NZHTA 2026 Conference Convenor.
