For contested positions, written statements will be distributed to NZHTA members.

Chris Walker from St Margaret’s College has agreed to act as the Returning Officer. Only he will be able to see the identity of the voters to check that they are NZHTA members. Only one vote from a school can be accepted.

In the last pānui, we drew your attention to the Part 1 Report of the urgent WAI 3553 claim into the education reforms of the past three years. We also explained how these findings were of particular relevance to teachers of History and Social Science. Since then, Part 2 of the Report has been published, recommending that the Crown restore Section 127(1)(d) of the Education and Training Act 2020 in its entirety, in terms of Board of Trustees obligations to give effect to Tiriti, as well as to work with Māori in the education sector to ensure the reinstated provision preserves its full substance and effect.

Te Akapūmau, a group of Tangata Tiriti and Tangata Whenua educators committed to honouring Te Tiriti in education, have launched a petition calling on the Tribunal's findings to be honoured. This petition calls for a restoration in balance in the teaching of Aotearoa New Zealand's histories and so, again, is particularly relevant to History and Social Science teachers. If you are interested in supporting this kaupapa, the petition can be found here: Action Station Petition Honour the Findings.

Y9-10 NZHTA Resources for 2027

The plan is for these to be available at the end of January 2027. We have teams working away on these. The units are also going to be peer-reviewed prior to publication. Links to these unit plans with a range of anchor lessons, resources, and suggested approaches to the knowledge and practices will be emailed out in the first pānui next year.
